Managing and deleting your data

How to remove specific things without closing your account — and how to close it, if that is what you want.

Remove things yourself, without closing your account

Most of what NaiCar holds about you, you can remove yourself, from your account settings, without asking us and without giving up your account.

An ad: open Your ads, choose the ad, and remove it. It leaves the site immediately and stops appearing in search, in alerts, and in the price guide.

A saved ad, a saved search, or an alert: remove it from Saved or Alerts. These are deleted outright rather than hidden, and the emails stop with them.

A photo: edit the ad and remove the picture. The stored image record goes with it.

Your phone number: clear the field in Profile and save. The number is erased from your account, and any verification held against it is dropped at the same time.

Your name, city, photo and email preferences: all editable in Profile and in the notification settings beside it.

Your recently-viewed list never leaves your device — clearing your browser data removes it. Turning push notifications off on a device stops them; that device’s record is marked inactive rather than erased.

Ask us to erase something you cannot remove yourself

A few records have no self-serve control — enquiries you sent or received, and the account record itself.

Email [email protected] from the address on your account, and say what you want erased. You do not need to close your account to ask, and asking will not close it.

We will act within 30 days, confirm when it is done, and tell you plainly if something has to be kept and why. You can use the same address to ask what we hold about you, or to have it corrected.

Taking a break, without losing anything

If you only want to step away for a while, deactivate instead of closing. Your ads come off the site and sign-in stops working, but nothing is deleted — your ads, saved searches, enquiries and settings all stay exactly as they are.

You will find it under Account and data in your account settings. Coming back is a code we email you: your ads go live again in the state they were in, and an ad you had removed yourself stays removed.

Closing your account entirely

If you want the whole account gone rather than a pause, open Account and data and choose Close my account. That removes every one of your ads from the site, signs you out of every device, and destroys your stored password — so it is not something you can undo by signing back in.

Closing is not the same as erasing, and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise. Closing takes your ads down and shuts the account; the underlying records stay in our database.

To have those records erased as well, email [email protected] and ask. We will erase what we can and tell you exactly what we cannot, and why — see below.

What we keep, and why

Order and payment records, because accounting requires them. Moderation records where an ad was reported or removed, so that the same listing cannot simply be posted again.

Records connected to a vehicle sale, for as long as the law may require them. A car is a registered asset, and questions about who advertised one — from a buyer, an insurer, or the authorities acting on a lawful request — can arrive long after the ad has gone. We keep enough to answer them honestly.

Anything under a legal hold. If a record is subject to a lawful request or an investigation we are required to preserve it, and we cannot erase it while that is true — not even at your request.

Everything else goes when you ask. If a record falls into one of these categories we will tell you which one, rather than refusing without a reason.
